Points won by each set: | 35-26, 46-37 |

31 % Medvedev – 20 of 64
On February 24th 2022, the day of an unprecedented Russian invasion of Ukraine, unofficially Medvedev [2] became the 27th best player in the world of the Open Era (third Russian following Kafelnikov & Safin, first born in the 90s). That day Djokovic [1] lost in the Dubai quarterfinal – to retain his position he must have won the title on the assumption Medvedev wouldn’t triumph in Acapulco.
The Nadal-Medvedev semifinal clash was anticipated since the event inception. Their four previous matches were dramatic including an amazing AO final this year, quite surprisingly the scoreline was one-sided in Mexico, yet the 2nd set would have gone in opposite direction if Medvedev had played better the most important points – there were three ‘deuce’ games, Medvedev lost them all (6, 9, 3 deuces respectively) – at 1:2 and 2:3 he was unable to convert 11 break points (4, 7) while serving at 3:5 he wasted 4 game points.
Serve & volley: Nadal 4/5, Medvedev 4/8
Nadal’s route to his 91st title:
1 Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-2
2 Stefan Kozlov 6-0, 6-3
Q Tommy Paul 6-0, 7-6(5)
S Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-3
W Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4
